| alright i aint the best but here it is..
Gangs in the United States
“Street gangs are active ninety-four percent of the time in medium-to-large sized
cities,” according to the FBI. The first known gang was called the “Five Points,” which
evolved in the 1980’s in New York. Since then gangs have rapidly grown. One of the
most dangerous gangs in the United States is Marasalvatrucha, or MS-13. Their favorite
weapon is the machete which is used to chop off people’s hands. A machete is a large
heavy knife. These gangs are a factor for our community. Families are concerned for their
children; some are even killed cause of gang violence. Gangs grow due to the lack of
love, peer pressure, and people trying to fit in.
When I say lack of love I am talking about family love. “Some gang members are
from single parent families or families that don’t pay attention to them, so they find a
new family in a gang,” according to the judges of the 19th Judicial Circuit. My brother
Robert, also known as “Risky,” felt he was missing love. He grew up without a father and
he always felt that he needed something else. My mother, Leticia, would give him what
he wanted, but that still was not good enough. Robert first belonged to a crew, which is a
group of people working together. It was more of tagging, or graffiti, than violence. Then
he joined the gang called “Maravilla,” a well known gang here in the streets of Los
Angeles.
Robert felt like this was his family. He spent more time with them than with his
real family. Although he knew that the crime rate was high, he did not care. Gangs often
do drive by shootings, not caring who it is they harm. My brother was a victim, he was
not armed and was in front of the hospital waiting for a taxi to take him home when he
was shot. Robert is now paralyzed from the waist down. This does not only occur with
men, but with women too. They join gangs for the same reason, for the sense of
“belonging to a family” and power, protection and respect. This happens to a lot of
families in the United States.
Gangs also emerge through peer pressure. Peer pressure occurs in school or
around the community. It does not necessarily have to occur in the family, but in most
cases it does. Family members follow the footsteps of older family members. My cousin
Angel followed my brother’s footsteps, just like my brother followed the footsteps of my
cousins Javier and Ulysses. Angel looked up to Robert and Javier. He was not able to join
the gang because he was arrested and sent to juvenile. He is serving a year for grand theft
auto. This did not only occur with my cousin Angel, my friend also followed her
brother’s footsteps. To get into a gang, girls needed to be: “beaten and kicked by gang
members, robbery of drive by shooting, getting tattoos, having to fight 5-12 gang
members at once, or having sex with multiple male gang members,” the study said.
These people need to think twice about joining gangs. What they do not realize is
that they are not just putting their lives at risk, but the lives of their family as well. It is
always in the news that someone innocent not involved in gangs have been killed due to
gang violence. This occurs in both the families that do and do not have gang members. If
a gang wants to harm a gang member, but cannot find them; they will go after the family.
Families are then scared that something might happen to them when they least expect it.
“Brenda “Smiley” Paz, a former gang member and FBI informant, was found
dead by the Shenandoah River in Virginia on July 2003. Paz, 17, pregnant, had been
repeatedly stabbed, her throat slashed so violently that her head was nearly severed. Paz
had left the federal witness protection program against the FBI’s advice. Authorities
allege that an MS-13 leader, Denis Rivera, 20, commissioned the killing from his jail
cell—while awaiting trial in another federal murder case—to prevent Paz from testifying
against him. Rivera has pleaded not guilty,” according to the U.S. News. Brenda put her
life at risk and it had consequences.
A lot of people try to fit in, that is why they join gangs. Some feel that it is cool to
be in a gang, they feel like they will earn respect. “Youth are joining gangs at a younger
age and remaining longer, the membership may exist between the ages of 6 and 60,”
according to the judges of the 19th Judicial Circuit. Gang members also feel that by
joining a gang they will make more friends, but they are actually making enemies. Some
people start wearing different color combinations, such as black and blue, to show what
gang they are representing. Some families are scared to walk down their neighborhoods
knowing that there is a possibility if they wear those colors that they will be harmed. In
the end none of these things are worth it.
Gangs have grown due to lack of love, peer pressure, and people trying to fit in.
Although my brother joined a gang, I did not follow his footsteps. Not only was it the
lack of love, but it was the neighborhood and the people he grew up with that had an
influence on him. I did not have any negativity around me, just in my family and through
friends. So why did I not end up like my brother? I saw what gangs caused and I did not
want to make that same mistake. I was able to stop peer pressure. There is no need to try
to fit in, just be yourself and everyone will take notice of the type of person they are
talking to. Gangs are everywhere! That does not mean you have to join them.
